Debits to individual accounts fo r the wee's ending January 2 aggregated
$10,704,000,000 or about 24 per cent over the to ta l o f $5,669,000,000 reported fo r
the*preceding week. Both the current and preceding weeksincluded but fiv e business
days. The increase i s la rgely due to the heavy end-of-month and end-of-year pay­
ments. All o f the more important centers, except Detroit and St. Paul, report com­
paratively large increases. New York City reports an increase o f $1,103,000,000,
Chicago-an increase o f $150,000,000, Cleveland - an increase o f *101,000,000 and
Philadelphia - an increase o f $99>000,000.
As compared with the corresponding period a year ago debits fo r the week Tinder
review show a decrease o f $861,000,000 or o f about 7 per cent. Smaller figures are
reported fo r rcost o f the leading centers including New York City, Pittsburgh and
St. Loui s.
Aggregate debi.ts fo r the l4 l centers for -which figures have been published
weekly since January, 1919> were $10,059,307i000 as compared with $8 , 1 3 1 , 332,000 fo
the preceding week and $10,916,728,000, fo r the week ending January 3, 1923.
Debits to individual accounts were reported to the Federal Reserve Board fo r
banks in 250 centers, o f which 244 are included in the summary by Federal reserve
d is t r ic ts .
