PRESS STATEMENT
January U , 193-9 •
Below is given the Federal Reserve Boar d*s twentieth weekly statement of
total debits to deposit account, reported through the Federr.l Reserve Banks by
about I 5O of the country5s more important clearing houses*
Transactions
cover the weekly periods ending Tuesday December 2k and ‘’.^esday December
31* The statement closes with a recapitulation giving comparative data ty
reserve districts for those centers reporting complete data fo’r bo£h weeks.
Owing to the short <veek (Ne^ Year1 s day falling on Wednesday) the cumulative
weekly debits, both to individual and bank accounts, continue much lovifer than for
the weekly periods prior to the Holidays.
A substantial increase in debits to
individual account is reported by the banks in the New York district, though
total debits to individual account for all reporting clearing house^centers are
about 10 millions less than for the week immediately precedingDebits to bank
account show the largest increases in the Boston and Philadelphia districts, the
total for all reporting banks being about 12 millions larger than for the sveek
preceding Christmas.
Comparative data for the last two weeks cover debit transactions for clear
ing house banks in 137 centers Figures of reporting clearing houses by Federal Reserve districts are
as follows, (in thousands of dollars, i . e», 000 ' s omitted) '
