GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTS Bank d e b i t s t o demand d e p o s i t accounts, except interbank and U. S. Government accounts, as r e p o r t e d by banks i n 344 l e a d i n g c e n t e r s f o r t h e month of December aggregated $257 b i l l i o n . During t h e p a s t t h r e e months d e b i t s amounted t o $725 b i l l i o n or 2 . 4 per cent above t h e t o t a l r e p o r t e d f o r t h e corresponding p e r i o d a year ago. At banks i n New York City t h e r e was an i n c r e a s e of 2 . 1 per cent compared with t h e corresponding three-months p e r i o d a year ago; a t 6 o t h e r c e n t e r s t h e i n c r e a s e was 4 . 1 p e r c e n t ; and a t 337 ot her c e n t e r s i t was 1 . 8 p e r c e n t .
