PRESS STATEMENT
January 11, 1919■
Eslow is given the Federal Reserve Board’ s twenty first weekly statement of
total debits to deposit account, reported through the Federal Reserve Banks by
about 150 of the country13 more important clearing houses. Transactions cover
the weekly periods ending Tuesday December 31 ^nd Wednesday January e>1
The
statement closes with a recapitulation giving comparative data by reserve dis
tricts for ail centers reporting complete data for both weeks.
Large increases in the weekly figures are shown by all bank centers» total
debits for the week being the largest shown since the beginning of the service.
Some of the increase over the figures for the two immediately preceding short
weeks is due to the fact that the present report covers a full six-day week.
.Among other factors at work to swell the total beyond normal limits were payments
ofinterest and dividends and other quarterly and annual payments made at the begin
ning of the new year.
Finance operations of the Government, in connection with
the January 2 certificate issue, no doubt, also contributed to increase the debits
.to both' individual and bank accounts.
Comparative data for the last two weeks cover debit transactions for clear
ing house banks in l46 centers.
Figaros of reporting clearing houses by Federal Reserve districts are,
as follows, (in thousands of dollars, i. e., 000 *s omitted)
