STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS

For immediate release

BANK DEBITS

Board of Governors
of the Federal Reserve System
December 2.3, 1940

Debits to deposit accounts (except interbank accounts), as reported by banks
in leading cities for the week ended December 18, aggregated $11,824,000,000. Total
debits during the 13 weeks ended December 18 amounted to $119,4-50,000,000, or 8
percent above the total reported for the corresponding period a year ago. At banks
in Hew York City there was an increase of 7 percent compared ivith the corresponding
period a year $ g o , and at the other reporting centers there was an increase of
8 percent,
