BANK DEBITS

Debits to individual accounts for the week ending December 19 aggregated
$10,730,000,000 or about 11 per cent above the total of $9 , 699 *000,000 reported for
the preceding week. The increase is largely due to the payment of Federal income
, and profits taxes due on December 15 in addition to the usual mid-month payments.
All of the more important centers, except Dallas and Portland, O r e ,, report larger
figures than for the week before. New York City reports an increase of $507, 000,000,
Chicago - an increase of $79>000,000, Boston - an increase of $70 ,000, 000, and
Philadelphia - an increase of $50,000,000.
As compared with the corresponding period in 1922, debits for the week under
review show an increase of $310,000,000 or about 3 per cent. Larger figures are
reported for most of the important centers. New York City shows an increase of
$106,000,000, Boston - an increase of $51,000,000, Chicago - an increase of
$44,000,000 and Los Angeles - an increase of $30,000p0&The largest decrease,
$l 6 ,000,000, is reported by Pittsburgh,
Debits to individual accounts were reported to the Federal Reserve Board for
banks in 250 centers, of which 242 are included in the summary by Federal reserve
districts.
