BANK DEBITS.

Volume of business for the week ending April 26, was $8,529,000,000,
marking a slight increase over the total of $3,797,000,000 reported for the
preceding week. A considerably larger increase, $132,000,000, was shown for
New York City alone, one of $39,000,000 for Boston, and of $20,000,000 for
Pittsburgh, while many of the other centers reported smaller totals than
the weak before, the most x'ronounced declines being shown for Chicago and
St. Louis.
As compared with the week ending April 27, 1321, the volume of business
for the report week was larger by $1,728,000,000, or about 24 per cent, the in­
crease for New York City alone being $1,536,000,000,or 44 per cent.
The volume of business is measured by debits to individual accounts reported
to the Federal Reserve Board for banks in clearing house centers. The number of
centers reporting this week is 243, of which 165 a-re included in the summary by
Federal reserve districts.
