COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans decreased a n e t of $120 m i l l i o n i n weekly
r e p o r t i n g l a r g e commercial bank during t h e week ended January 31.
The p r i n c i p a l n e t d e c r e a s e s were $74 m i l l i o n In loans t o "other 1 1 p u b l i c
u t i l i t i e s , $54 m i l l i o n i n bankers 1 a c c e p t a n c e s , $49 m i l l i o n t o m a n u f a c t u r e r s
of food, l i q u o r , and tobacco p r o d u c t s , $46 m i l l i o n t o commodity d e a l e r s , and
$42 m i l l i o n t o m a n u f a c t u r e r s of " o t h e r " f a b r i c a t e d metal p r o d u c t s .
The l a r g e r o f f s e t t i n g n e t i n c r e a s e s were $50 m i l l i o n i n loans t o
s e r v i c e s , $35 m i l l i o n t o r e t a i l t r a d e , and $33 m i l l i o n t o m a n u f a c t u r e r s
of machinery.

T o t a l commercial and i n d u s t r i a l ( b u s i n e s s ) term l o a n s were $26,682 m i l l i o n ,
as of J a n u a r y 31. T h i s was an i n c r e a s e of $2,253 m i l l i o n o v e r t h e comparable d a t e
a y e a r ago and an i n c r e a s e of $605 m i l l i o n over t h e l a s t Wednesday of December. The
p r i n c i p a l change was a $323 i n c r e a s e i n term l o a n s t o b u s i n e s s e s i n t h e Mining c l a s s i f i c a t i o n . D u r a b l e and Nondurable goods i n d u s t r y l o a n s i n c r e a s e d $72 m i l l i o n and
$92 m i l l i o n r e s p e c t i v e l y . Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l term l o a n s t o f o r e i g n e r s
d e c r e a s e d $18 m i l l i o n .
