showed the usual s u b s t a n t i a l increase in December. Although the amounts
outstanding on these accounts have, been running, s u b s t a n t i a l l y -larger than
in 1964, they have been paid off at, approximately the same r a t e .
Charge accounts outstanding were about pne-third l a r g e r a t the
year-end than a month e a r l i e r , following the customary seasbnal -pattern". The
pace a t which-these accounts were being repaid was f a s t e r than e i t h e r the
month-ago or the year-ago r a t e . ,

Department s t o r e s a l e s of a l l types expanded during D e c ^ b e r i f T I i n e
wich seasonal e x p e c t a t i o n s . Cash s a l e s , which tcustomairily show l a r g e r "gains
in December than c r e d i t .sales, were up 77 p.er dent. Most of the 7 per cent ;
increase over December 1;964 in t o t a l s a l e s , was- a t t r i b u t a b l e r to tha. growth in
cash and instalment (business.
