RETAIL FURNITURE STORE REPORT FOR AUGUST 1962

Instalment accounts receivable of reporting furniture stores
shewed little further change in August and remained slightly above
the year-earlier level. Collections on these accounts were 12 per
cent of the amount outstanding at the beginning of the month, the
same rate
as in July.
Total sales at reporting stores, which usually increase in
August, were up 14 per cent from July and were 4 per cent above the
volume in August 1961. Sales of all types shared in the August
increase. For the first eight months of this year, total sales were
8 per cent larger than in the corresponding period of 1961, with
somewhat larger gains in both cash and instalment sales and smaller
gains in charge-account sales.
