September decreased 8 per cent from August to September, r e f l e c t i n g declines of 11 per cent i n cash s a l e s , 7 per cent
i n instalment s a l e s , and 6 per cent i n charge-account s a l e s .
Sales of a l l types also continued below a year ago.
Instalment accounts receivable at furniture stores
continued p r a c t i c a l l y unchanged during September. Balances
at the end of the month, however, were 6 per cent above the
year-ago l e v e l . Collections on instalment accounts during
September were also unchanged from the preceding month.
The r e t a i l value of furniture store inventories at
the end of September was U per cent above August and 3 per
cent above the year-ago l e v e l . At the September rate of
s a l e s , stocks on hand amounted to about a 5 months * supply.
