F u r n i t u r e s t o r e s a l e s i n January • showed a decline of hi per c e n t ,
due p r i n c i p a l l y t o seasonal i n f l u e n c e s y. and .continued w e l l belov: t h e
volume of a year e a r l i e r . The magnitude of the decline's from December t o
January i n both cash and instalment s a l e s approximated those occurring a
year e a r l i e r , but the r e d u c t i o n i n charge-account s a l e s was somewhat
sharper than i n the preceding y e a r . S a l e s i n January 19lt9 were below those
i n the corresponding month a year ago f o r each type of t r a n s a c t i o n , the
d e c l i n e s ranging from 9 per cent i n instalment s a l e s t o 17 per cent f o r
charge-account s a l e s and 18 p e r cent f o r cash t r a n s a c t i o n s .
Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e declined" 6 per cent i n January, but
remained about o n e - f i f t h above the amount outstanding a year ago. C o l l e c t i o n s
on instalment accounts were s l i g h t l y l e s s than i n December, and the r a t i o
of these c o l l e c t i o n s t o accounts outstanding on January 1 declined one p o i n t
t o 16 per c e n t . The average repayment period f o r i n s t a l m e n t accounts was
about one y e a r , approximately one and one-half months longer than i n January

1918.

I n v e n t o r i e s of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s were reduced U per cent i n January
b u t a t t h e e.nd of the. month were a t t h e l e v e l of a year e a r l i e r . The d o l l a r
value of stocks on January 31 t h i s year was equal to about s i x months'
supply a t t h e c u r r e n t r a t e of s a l e .
