IffiTAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1953

Total s a l e s a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s increased 16 per centfrom September,to October, when some expansion i s u s u a l . This
gain r e f l e c t e d i n c r e a s e s i n a l l types cf s a l e s — 18 per cent i n
instalment s a l e s , lU p e r cent i n charge-account s a l e s , and 19
per cent i n cash s a l e s . Comparisons with a year ago, however,
show t h a t c u r r e n t volume i s lower f o r a l l types of s a l e s .
• Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s
a t the encl of October were p r a c t i c a l l y unchanged from t h e p r e ceding month, b u t were 2 per cent above t h e l e v e l of a year
e a r l i e r . C o l l e c t i o n s on these accounts increased 11 per cent
from September t o October.
The r e t a i l value of i n v e n t o r i e s a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s
on October 31 was 2 per cent above t h e preceding month-end,
but was below t h e same d a t e l a s t y e a r by about the same p e r centage. Stocks on hand amounted t o about a li months' supply
a t the October r a t e of s a l e s .
