LOUIS -- Dave Haas, Sandy Recor and Terry Funderburk, teachers at Pattonville High School, traded in their pointers for pencils on Nov. 7, 1994, to attend The ABCs of Global Trade, a free economic education workshop hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, in conjunction with the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. At the workshop, Haas, Recor and Funderburk and more than 60 other Missouri and Illinois high school teachers learned the issues behind free trade and creative ways to explain them to their students. The need for this type of economic education is clear. A 1992 Gallop Poll on American Economic Literacy found that when American high school seniors were asked questions about fundamental economics, only 35 percent could give correct answers.
