For release:

WHAT:

Redesigned $10 and $5 Bills to be Unveiled

WHEN:

Tuesday, Nov. 16
9 a.m. CST

WHERE:

Treasury Department
Washington, D.C.

WHO:

Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow
and Secret Service Director Brian L. Stafford.

WHY:

Scheduled to be issued sometime in the middle of 2000, the new $10 and $5
bills include new and modified security features to deter counterfeiters.
Because these two bills are widely used in many types of vending and other
machines that dispense currency, additional emphasis will be placed on
working with manufacturers and distributors of these devices to ensure a
smooth transition when the new bills are issued. In addition, special seminars
will be conducted for cash handlers to learn how they can discourage
counterfeiting by closely examining all the bills they handle.

NOTE:

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis will have a sample of each bill. In
addition, a video news release containing sound bites of the participants in the
ceremony, along with B-roll footage of the production of the new $10 and $5
bills, will be available to TV stations via satellite transmission on Tuesday,
November 16, and again on Wednesday, November 17:
