FED ERAL RESERVE BANK
OF NEW YORK

January 17, 19 7 I+
TREASURY S U P P LEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME P R OGRAM
Special Interim Payment Checks (Westchester County)

To A l l B a n king Institutions
Located in W e s t c hester County, New York:
On N ovember 29, 1973 we informed the chief executive officers
of all banks in the Second Federal Reserve District of the issuance,
b e g i n n i n g January 197^, b y the Treasury Department of monthly Supplemental
Security Income checks, which are yellow in color and b e a r A B A routing
symbol/transit numb e r 0000-0050.
In addition, on December 27, 1973, in
Circular No. 7308, w e advised all banks, and others concerned, in the
Second Federal Reserve District that under the new Supplemental Security
Income Program, green-colored Treasury checks w o u l d be issued to make
advance payments immediately to c l a i m a n t s . The advance-payment checks
are drawn to the order of designated c a s h i e r s , and b e a r A B A routing
symbol/transit number 0000- 0051 .
The Treas u r y Department has now asked us to notify banking
institutions in W e s t c h e s t e r County, New York, that special interim p a y
ment checks are b e i n g issued, effective J a n uary 17, 197*+, to certain
Supplemental Secur i t y Income beneficiaries in Westchester County. These
special interim payment checks are yellow in color and bear A B A routing
symbol/transit 'number 0000-0050.
The checks are be i n g p r epared by
typewriter, bear a Birmingham, A l a b a m a dateline, and are signed by
"R.L. Langdon." Since these checks are b e i n g p r e p a r e d b y typewriter,
some bankers have questioned their authenticity.
The purpose of this
letter is to alert y o u to the appearance of these checks, w h i c h are
authentic, are i ntended to be issued for a limited period of time, and are
c urrently b e i n g issued only in New Yo r k City and Westchester County.
Since the check routing number, 0000-0050, for the special interim
payment checks is the same as that for the computer-prepared, yellow
S u p p lemental S e curity Income checks issued m o n thly and the buff-c o l o r e d
Government checks , the special interim payment checks should be included in
cash letter deposits w i t h these items.
The special interim payment checks
should not be commingled in cash letter deposits of green-colored Government
checks (ABA routing symbol/transit number 0000-0051.)

Alfred Hayes,
President.
