COUNTERFEIT FOOD COUPONS

This Bank has recently received a substantial number of counterfeit
$5 food coupons from banks located in New York City and northern New Jersey.
There are two different types of such counterfeit food coupons in circulation,
both of which are considered of poor quality.

The most obvious defects are in

the serial numbers.
One such coupon that has been counterfeited is a $5 Food Coupon
Series 1971.

This coupon contains the following characteristics:
Check letter
Position number
Face plate

upper left corner
upper left corner
lower right corner

The counterfeit coupon has the following defects not found in
genuine food coupons:
1.

Two small white defects in border edge to upper left
letter "S" in "U. S. Department of Agriculture".

2.

Horizontal shading lines in center of large "$"
represented by series of zigzag lines.

3.

Sky effects represented by series of zigzag lines.

"VALUE $30" on face of book cover printed offset
rather than typographically.

Serial number on face of book and on coupons is printed
typographically (which is correct) but differs in
size and style from the genuine.

6.

Coupons separate from book by a series of consecutive
slits rather than the usual round perforations that
are contained in genuine books.

The other counterfeit coupon is also a $5 Food Coupon Series 1971;
it contains the following characteristics:
Check letter
Position number
Face plate

The counterfeit coupon has the following defects not found in genuine
food coupons:
1.

The prefix and suffix letters in the serial number are
out of alignment with the serial numbers and are
typewritten.

2.

Small white spots appear in the portrait of Lincoln.
The details in the portrait and portrait background are
not as distinct as the detail in genuine coupons.

3.

The fine lines in the border scrollwork are not as
clear as genuine coupons.

We would appreciate your cooperation in notifying your employees and
your customers about these counterfeit $5 food coupons.

Please note that any

counterfeit coupons received by this Bank will be treated in the same manner
as counterfeit currency and charged back to the depositing bank's account.
Please report all instances of suspected counterfeit food coupons to
the nearest office of the United States Secret Service and the local Food and
Nutrition Service Field Office.
