International M oney O rd e r Service
Between the U nited States and Ja p a n
To All Depository Institutions in the Second
Federal Reserve District, and Others Concerned:
We have been asked by the U.S. Postal Service to advise you that a new international money order
service has been inaugurated between the postal administrations of the United States and Japan.
The procedures for this new service vary somewhat from those for the processing of other in
ternational or domestic international postal money orders. In particular —
o The new service requires the use of a special pink form for international money orders being
sent to Japan. (Other international money orders are yellow.)
Q Occasionally, the purchaser will elect not to send an international money order out of the
country and will name a domestic payee. This is permissible, and the item should be hon
ored when properly endorsed.
o Money orders issued by the postal administration of Japan and presented for payment in the
United States are also colored pink and are oversized documents. When presented for col
lection at a Federal Reserve Bank, these money orders should not be commingled with other
items but should be presented in a separate cash letter.
Note that the maximum value of any international money order, including these money orders,
is $700.
Printed on the following pages are exhibits showing the new money orders, compared with
international money orders of other countries.
