CHANGES IN U.S. POSTAL MONEY ORDERS
To All Depository Institutions, and Others Concerned,
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

We have been informed by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that several changes have been made in
postal money orders now entering circulation. Following is a description of the changes:
1. A USPS seal has been printed in the area where the seal from the clerk’s validation plate previously was printed. Also,
the statement “Void Without USPS Seal” has been deleted.
2. The phrase “Five hundred dollars” has been printed in the area previously used for limitation plate values.
3. On the back of the money order are new instructions regarding the cashing of a money order. The instructions state:
WARNING-CASHIER: Require positive identification.
Hold money order to light and examine dollar amount area to
assure it is not lighter than rest of form. Do not cash money
order if there are signs of erasures or other alterations.
By observing the money order in direct light the cashier will be able to determine if there are areas where the form
allows more light to pass through. Particular attention should be given to the amount portion. Areas of increased transpar
ency may indicate the money order has been erased or altered.
If the cashier detects what appears to be an alteration of the money order, the cashier must call the postmaster or the
postmaster’s designee. If the postmaster also believes the money order has been altered, the Inspection Service must be
notified immediately.
