FEDERAL RESERVE BANK
OF NEW YORK

r Circular No. 9261
I September 5, 1929J

New Counterfeit

To all Banks, Trust Companies and Others Concerned
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 627 describes a new
counterfeit as follows:
$10 FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE (New Issue) : On the Federal Reserve Bank
of Kansas City, Missouri; series of 1928; check letter " D " ; face plate No. 2; back plate
number indistinct; H. T. Tate, Treasurer of the United States; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; portrait of Hamilton.
This counterfeit is a photo-mechanical production printed on one sheet of paper
from poorly etched plates which fail to reveal the finely engraved lines of the genuine
in the portrait and border lathework on the face and back. The denominational lettering upon which the green seal is impressed is barely visible, due to faulty etching,
and the seal itself is illegible for the same reason. The back plate is likewise poorly
printed, resembling a woodcut impression executed in showcard ink. This counterfeit
note is a trifle smaller than the genuine, the face and back plates being a fraction of an
inch shorter. Specimen at hand bears serial number J02083132A.
This counterfeit should not deceive the ordinarily careful handler of currency.

GEORGE L. HARBISON,

Governor.
