FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK Cash Department ["Circular No. 84 ll L April 25, 1928J New Counterfeit To all Banks, Trust Companies and Others Concerned in the Second Federal Reserve District: The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 601 describes a new counterfeit as follows: $5 FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE: On the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, California; series 1914; check letter " E " ; face plate No. 538; back plate number indistinct, probably 3672; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; portrait of Lincoln. This is a well-executed production printed from photo-mechanical plates on two sheets of paper, without imitation silk threads. The general appearance of the face is deceptive, but the numbering and seal are printed in dull blue and the seal design is not clearly outlined in the printing operation, the lettering in the circle being almost illegible. The back of the counterfeit, while of good color, is not so well executed, many of the fine lines in the etching being missing. Specimen at hand bears serial No L81460229A. Very truly yours, BENJ. STRONG, Governor.
