FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK I" Circular No. 7241 |_May 14, 1920j Cash Department New Counterfeit To all Banks, Trust Companies and Others Concerned in the Second Federal Reserve District: The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 577 describes a new counterfeit as follows: $20 Federal Reserve Note On the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Mo.; series 1914; check letter " A " ; face plate number indistinct; back plate number 618; W. G. McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury; John Burke, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Cleveland. This is a poorly executed production apparently printed from zinc etched plates on two pieces of paper between which threads have been distributed in imitation of the genuine fibre. In the border lathework on the face, the fine lines are indistinct and smudgy, while the portraiture is so dark that the likeness of Cleveland is almost unrecognizable. The back is printed in pale green which reflects a false tone. The serial number—specimen at hand showing H8719254A—is deeply impressed in the printing process. This counterfeit should not deceive the average handler of currency. Very truly yours, BENJ. STEONG, Governor.
