New Counterfeit National Bank Note

To all Banks, Trust Companies and Others Concerned
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 575 describes a new
counterfeit as follows:
$5 National Bank Note
On the National Bank of Commerce, St. Louis, Mo., series 1902; check letter " C " ;
face plate number 4; back plate number 1253; W. T. Vernon, Register of the Treasury; Lee McClung, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Ben Harrison; charter number 4178; bank number A223730, upper right and lower left corners.
This counterfeit is printed from zinc-etched plates on two pieces of paper between
which threads have been distributed in imitation of the silk fibre. The seal and charter number are printed in dull blue. The back is executed in a dark shade of green
ink which gives the note a smudgy appearance. The face, however, is fairly deceptive, particularly the portraiture. The signatures of the bank officials form a part of
the face plate, being printed out in the same operation. Care should be exercised in
handling notes of this description.
Very truly yours,

B E N J . STRONG,

Governor.
