New Counterfeits
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 572 describes two new
counterfeits as follows:
$10 United States Note (Buffalo Head)
Series 1901; small portraits of Lewis and Clark; check letter " C " ; H. V. Speelman,
Register of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; face plate No.
156; back plate number indistinct.
This is a photographic production printed on two pieces of paper with imitation silk
threads, the numbering and seal being hand-colored with red ink. The specimen at
hand bears serial number E51855171. This note is waxed, giving it a glazed appearance, and should not deceive the average person handling currency.
$20 Federal Reserve Note
On the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio; series 1914; check letter " H " ;
face plate No. 1167; back plate number not discernible; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of
the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Cleveland.
This is a poorly executed production from lithographic plates on two pieces of paper
between which threads have been distributed in imitation of the silk fibre. The etching
on both face and Lack, particularly the lettering, is so crude as to make the note
appear as though it were finished crudely in show-card ink. The portrait is roughly disclosed and fails to even reveal Cleveland's likeness. The seal and serial number are
printed in bright blue, the specimen at hand being D26058208A. This is an exceptionally crude counterfeit and should be readily detected.

Very truly yours,
BENJ. STBONG,

Governor.
