fCircular No. 697"|
L November 19, 1925 J

New Counterfeit $5 Federal Reserve Note
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savinqs Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 567 describes a new counterfeit $5 Federal Reserve note as follows:
On the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, check letter " A " ; face plate
number 1376; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Lincoln; back plate number 3331.
This is a well executed photo-mechanical production on a single piece of
paper without silk threads or imitation of them. The fine lines in the border
lathework are well defined, but the general appearance of the note is off
color, having a greenish tint which seems to be reflected from the back. The
portrait of Lincoln is dull and without lustre and the seal is poorly executed in purple tone, while the serial number—the specimen at hand being
D401201H—is made with a machine which does not imitate the figures in
the genuine very closely, the numerals " 1 " and " 4 " being noticeably different in formation. The serial number on the counterfeit is preceded by
the letter " D " , whereas in the genuine the letter " B " appears, this being
the letter of the New York bank.
Care should be exercised in handling bills of this description as the counterfeit is calculated to deceive the unwary.

Very truly yours,
BENJ. STBONG,

Governor.
