New Counterfeits
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 563 describes four new
counterfeits as follows:
$5 Federal Reserve Note
'' On the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio; check letter ' C'; face plate 282;
A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the United
States; portrait of Lincoln.
"This is a poorly executed counterfeit, apparently printed from photo-mechanical
plates, red and blue ink lines being used to imitate the silk fiber of the genuine paper.
The number of the specimen at hand is D-43052863A. This counterfeit should be
readily detected."
$5 Federal Reserve Note
"On the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Massachusetts; check letter ' F ' ; face
plate number indistinct; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White,
Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Lincoln.
"This is a well executed photo-mechanical production on a single piece of paper
without silk threads or imitation of them. The most noticeable defect is in the portrait of Lincoln, the eyes having a distorted staring appearance. The chin whiskers
are irregular in execution giving the appearance of a false beard. The number of the
specimen at hand is A-14356171A. Care should be exercised in handling bills of this
description as the counterfeit is calculated to deceive the unwary."
$20 Federal Reserve Note
"On the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Massachusetts; check letter ' B ' ; face
plate 112; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the
United States; portrait of Cleveland.
"This counterfeit is identical in every respect with the one described in our Circular 559* with the exception of the check letter, plate numbei, and signatures of
the Secretary and Treasurer."
$20 National Bank Note
"On the American Exchange National Bank of New York City; check letter ' 0 ' ;
Series of 1902; portrait of Hugh McCulloch; Chas. H. Treat, Treasurer of the United
States; J. W. Lyons, Register of the Treasury.
"This is a photographic production on a single piece of paper with red and blue
lines to imitate the silk fiber of the genuine. The numbers which appear on this counterfeit, and which are photographs, are Treasury number Y-982116H in the upper
right-hand corner, bank number 633928 in the lower left-hand corner. This counterfeit should be readily detected."

Very truly yours,
BBNJ. STBONG,
