Regional Check Clearing Center at Baltimore

To the Member Banks and Nonmember Clearing Banks
of the Second Federal Reserve District:

On January 2, 1970, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond will begin operation
of a regional check clearing center for approximately 90 participating banks within
a 40-mile radius of Washington, D. C., including banks in Washington, D. C., and
in the City of Baltimore. The center will be located at the Baltimore Branch of the
Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. To facilitate the operations of the regional check
clearing center, the following new routing symbols have been assigned to the par­
ticipating banks:
0520 — Banks in the C ity o f Baltimore (unchanged)
0540 — Banks in W ashington, D. C.
0550 — Banks in M aryland outside the City of Baltimore
0560 — Banks in Northern Virginia

Effective January 2, 1970, credit will be given one calendar day after receipt for
cash items bearing either the foregoing newly assigned routing symbols or the rout­
ing symbols that will be replaced by the new routing symbols, and received at our
Head Office or Buffalo Branch in accordance with the provisions of our Operating
Circular No. 5 and its Appendixes. As soon as we learn which banks will be par­
ticipating in the regional check clearing center, we will send you a list of their names,
together with their currently effective routing symbols.
Enclosed are copies of the First Supplements, effective January 2, 1970, to
Appendixes No. 1 and No. 2 of our Operating Circular No. 5, reflecting the foregoing
change.
