FEDERAL RESERVE BANK
OF NEW YORK

I" Circular No. 584 1
[January 7, 1924 J

Cash Department

New Counterfeit $5 Federal Reserve Note
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:

The Treasury Department in its circular letter No. 531 describes a new counterfeit
$5 Federal Reserve note as follows:
"On the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; check letter ' C ; face plate No.
525; A. W. Mellon, Secretary of the Treasury; Frank White, Treasurer of the
United States; portrait of Lincoln.
"This counterfeit is apparently printed from photo-mechanical plates of
amateurish workmanship. The paper has no silk threads in it nor imitation of
silk. The portrait of Lincoln is too dark, and is blotched with white spots. The
seal is green instead of blue. The lathe work is broken and poorly executed.
The lettering of the Latin inscription in the circle of the seal is very poorly done,
and the final T in the word 'sign" is upside down.
"This counterfeit should be readily detected by the portrait of Lincoln."

Very truly yours,
BENJ. STRONG
