FE D E RA L R E SE R V E BANK OF NEW YORK T Circular N o. 5 0 2 3 1 A pril 14, 1961 J L COUNTERFEIT COUPONS FROM U. S. TREASURY NOTES T o A ll B anks in the Second F ederal R eserve D istrict: W e have been requested by the United States Secret Service to alert all banks in this District to the fact that counterfeit coupons, all bearing the due date o f October 1, 1960 and data identifying them with 1% per cent U. S. Treasury Notes o f Series EA-1961, have been received by this Bank fo r payment. Counterfeit coupons aggre gating a large dollar amount already have been deposited with a member bank in this District. Your tellers should be warned to be on the alert fo r the appearance of similar coupons. Each of the counterfeit coupons was in the amount o f $7.50, indicating that the Treasury notes from which the counterfeits were purportedly detached were in the denomination of $1,000. Most of the counterfeit coupons presented to us bore serial numbers higher than No. 4900, which is the highest serial number appearing on a genuine coupon from a $1,000 denomination Treasury note of Series EA-1961. The quality of the paper on which the counterfeit coupons are printed is inferior to the quality of the genuine coupon paper, and no attempt has been made to simulate the red and blue fiber threads of the genuine paper. The counterfeits are printed by a photo-offset process, whereas genuine coupons are engraved; the color o f the green ink on the face o f the counterfeit coupons is lighter than on the genuine coupons. I f any such counterfeit coupons are received by you, please notify the nearest office of the United States Secret Service immediately. The coupons should be marked fo r identification and forwarded to the Secret Service, rather than to Washington, D. C. In this District, the Secret Service has offices in Room 801, Federal Office Building, 90 Church Street, New Y ork 7, N. Y . ; in the United States Court House, Buffalo 1, N. Y . ; in the Post Office Building, Syracuse, N. Y . ; and in the Post Office Building, Federal Square, Newark 2, N. J. Additional copies o f this circular will be furnished upon request. A lfred H ates, President.
