TCircular No. 4271
[December 27, 192lJ

New Counterfeit $5 Federal Reserve Note
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:
The Treasury Department in its circular letter N o . 484 describes a new counterfeit $5 Federal Reserve note as follows:
" O n the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago ; check letter ' C ; plate number
indecipherable; D . F . Houston, Secretary of the Treasury; John Burke,
Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Lincoln.
" This is a very poorly executed zinc etched production on a very cheap
paper, in the surface of which a few silk threads have been pressed.

The

bill is so poor that it should not deceive the ordinarily careful handler of
money, and a more detailed description of it is deemed unnecessary. "

Very truly yours,
B E N J . STRONG,

Governor
