Cash Department

New Counterfeit $100 Gold Certificate
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:
A new counterfeit $100 gold certificate is reported by the Secret Service in
Treasury Department circular letter N o . 477 as follows :
"Check letter 'A'; Lee McClung, Treasurer of the United States; W . T .
Vernon, Register of the Treasury; portrait of Benton.
" T h i s is a well-made counterfeit, from engraved plates, on two pieces
of paper, between which silk threads have been distributed, and will deceive the ordinary handler of money.

In the portrait of Benton, the right

side of the face is too heavily printed or engraved, which gives the face
the appearance of being too narrow.

The seal is deep carmine and should

immediately attract attention.

The numbering is excellent, the specimen a t

hand bearing N o . M231107.

T h e parallel ruling in the shade lines and

behind the portrait of Benton is poorly executed, the lines being very irregular.

Care should be exercised in handling bills of this issue."
Very truly yours,
B E N J . STRONG,

Governor
