F E D E R A L RESERVE BANK
O F N E W YORK
[Circular No. 363]
[April 12, 1921.J

Cash Department

New Counterfeit Paper Currency
Federal Reserve Note and Gold Certificate
Imitated in $100 Denomination
Circulating in Europe
To all Banks, Trust Companies and Savings Banks
in the Second Federal Reserve District:
Counterfeit paper money has been
a $100 Federal Reserve note discovered
gold certificate coming from Marseilles,
described by the Treasury Department

found abroad in two forms, one resembling
in Warsaw, Poland, and the other a $100
France. These imitations of the originals are
in its circular letter N o . 464, as follows:

$100 Federal Reserve Note
"On the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; check letter ' D ' ; W. G.
McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury; John Burke, Treasurer of the United
States; Portrait of Franklin.
"This is a poorly made counterfeit, on a single sheet of paper, with
ink lines to imitate the silk fibre of the genuine.
There is a complete
absence of the fine lathe work lines of the genuine. The cross lines behind
the portrait of Franklin in medallion are also missing, so t h a t the portrait
lacks the light and shade effects of the genuine.
The number of the
specimen at hand is B1135921A.
" I t is a poor counterfeit, and the only specimens so far received came
from Warsaw, Poland."

$100 Gold Certificate
"Check letter ' D ' ; face plate N o . 23; John Burke, Treasurer of the
United States; Houston B . Tehee, Register of the Treasury; portrait of
Benton. This is a deceptive counterfeit, printed from etched plates, on
two pieces of paper between which silk threads have been distributed.
The numbering and seal are particularly good, but the lathe work, especially
in the counter containing the letter ' C on the back of the note, is poor.
"This counterfeit will deceive those who do not exercise especial care
in examining bills of this denomination and issue. The specimen came from
Marseilles, France, and we are informed that a man has been arrested in
Barcelona, Spain, with several of these counterfeits in his possession."

Very truly yours,
