UNITED STATES SAVINGS BONDS
Distribution of Supplies and Material
for Use in Connection with the Bond-A-Month Plan
To Member Banks, and Nonmember State Banks and Trust Companies,
in the Second Federal Eeserve District:

The Secretary of the Treasury, in his letter dated March 17, 1947, which was sent to all
banks and trust companies in the country, announced the Bond-A-Month Plan for the sale of
United States Savings Bonds through such banks and trust companies, and solicited their
cooperation in promoting and operating the plan. As you know, the plan contemplates that
each checking-account depositor taking advantage of the plan will authorize his bank to make
a stated deduction from his account each month for the purchase of one or more Savings
Bonds.
To facilitate operations under the plan, certain supplies and materials will be furnished to
each bank and trust company. The State Director of the United States Savings Bonds Division
will send you, on request, a supply of descriptive folders to be enclosed with statements
mailed to your checking-account depositors at the end of May or during June. A postage-paid
authorization card attached to the folder may be detached and executed by the depositor and
returned to you by mail as your authority to charge his account for the purchase of bonds under
the plan. This folder, with the authorization card attached, is designed primarily for solicita
tion by mail; and it is assumed that you will wish to obtain from the State Director a quantity
sufficient to solicit each of your checking-account depositors in this manner. The folder will
not be available at this bank.
Enclosed is another form of authorization card which will be supplied by this bank upon
receipt of your order on the enclosed postal card. This form is for use primarily in connec
tion with the personal solicitation of depositors at the banking offices. Since it is assumed that
the initial solicitation of your depositors will be made by you through use of the descriptive
folder referred to in the preceding paragraph, the quantity of authorization cards to be sup
plied by this bank for office use should not be large. However, should your ultimate require
ments be larger than originally anticipated, we would be glad to furnish you with additional
supplies.
Bonds sold under the Bond-A-Month Plan may be mailed in special penalty envelopes, on
the same basis as other Savings Bonds have been mailed. We will continue to furnish issu
ing agents with penalty envelopes in quantities consistent with their requirements, in accordance
with our established procedure.

A l l a n S pr o u l ,

President.
