CIRCULAR N O . 186 FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK MONEY DEPARTMENT July 14, 1919 N E W C O U N T E R F E I T F E D E R A L RESERVE N O T E S T o ALL B A N K S , T R U S T COMPANIES AND SAVINGS BANKS IN THE SECOND FEDERAL RESERVE DISTRICT, DEAR SIRS: The Secret Service Division of the Treasury Department has, under date of July 11, 1919, in its circular letter No. 433, issued a notice with respect to new counterfeit Federal reserve notes as follows: "$20 F e d e r a l R e s e r v e N o t e On the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Massachusetts; series of 1914; check letter ' C ; plate number indistinct—appears to be either 16 or 18; W. G. McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury; John Burke, Treasurer of the United States; portrait of Cleveland. T h e counterfeit is apparently printed from hand-engraved plates, on a single piece of paper containing red ink lines in imitation of the silk fibre. T h e work is very crude, particularly the portrait of Cleveland, which bears no resemblance to the genuine. The title 'Secretary of the Treasury,' which appears under the signature of W. G. McAdoo on the genuine, has been omitted from the counterfeit. The number of the bill is A2647619A, and all of the notes so far discovered bear this same number. T h e counterfeit should be readily detected. $5 F e d e r a l R e s e r v e N o t e On the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio; series of 1914; check letter ' C ; plate number 5 1 ; W. G. McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury; John Burke, Treasurer of United States; portrait of Lincoln. This bill is a lithographic production, printed on heavy cheap paper, without silk threads or imitation of them. I t is a poorly made counterfeit, and should not deceive the ordinarily careful handler of money. T h e number of the specimen a t hand is D6773201A. W. H. Moran, Chief." W e have received the above notice to-day and are sending it to you as soon as possible for your information and guidance. Yours very truly, R. H. T R E M A N , Deputy Governor.
