Supplementing information given in our circulars Nos. 1291, 1299, 1305, and 1311, the
following additions should be made to the list of banking institutions in the Second Federal Reserve District which have been licensed to resume full banking operations:

New York D i s t r i c t , we are forwarding t o a l l member banks in the Second Federal
Reserve D i s t r i c t the following information which we have r e c e i v e d from the Secret
S e r v i c e D i v i s i o n d e s c r i b i n g new c o u n t e r f e i t n o t e s which have r e c e n t l y appeared in
c i r c u l a t i o n in the New York D i s t r i c t :

note i s an e x c e l l e n t photo-mechanical r e p r o d u c t i o n p r i n t e d on one
sheet of bond paper of good q u a l i t y , and appears with varying s e r i a l
numbers, "Engraving in the p o r t r a i t of JACKSON i s d e f e c t i v e and the

face of the p o r t r a i t p r e s e n t s a pale appearance. This c o u n t e r f e i t i s
very deceptive and care should be taken t o s c r u t i n i z e c l o s e l y a l l
n o t e s of t h i s denomination,

on one sheet of paper and i s n o t s u f f i c i e n t l y dangerous to deceive
the average handler .of currency.
Although the check l e t t e r s and face p l a t e numbers on the two
above described notes are somewhat s i m i l a r , they a r e n o t a t a l l simil a r in workmanship.
The Treasury Department, Secret Service D i v i s i o n , r e q u e s t s t h a t banks and
o t h e r s to whom c o u n t e r f e i t Government o b l i g a t i o n s may be presented endeavor when
p r a c t i c a b l e to o b t a i n information regarding t h e i r source and h i s t o r y . Any informat i o n of t h i s kind should be forwarded t o the Treasury Department, Secret Service
