FEDERAL RESERVE BANK
OF NEW YORK

(N)

January 19, 1932.
NEW COUNTERFEIT
To each Bank and Trust Company in the Second
Federal Reserve District and others concerned:
The Treasury Department in its circular letter No, 657, dated January 18,
1932, describes a new counterfeit as follows:
$10 FEDERAL RESERVE VOTE
On the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, New York; series of 1928
A; check letter "C"; face plate No. 27; back plate number missing;
W. 0. Woods, Treasurer of the United States; A. W. Mellon, Secretary
of the Treasury; portrait of Hamilton.
This is a dangerous counterfeit printed from intaglio plates on
one sheet of paper of good quality. On the face the finely shaded
lines in the portrait are scratchy and harsh, resembling a pen-and-ink
drawing. The check letter on the left side of the note has been omitted from its proper position below the upper left corner numeral.
Seal and numbering are embossed heavily in dark green, the impression
being visible from the back of the note. The back is executed in pale
green, unlike the coloring of the seal and numbering, and in the curled
leaf ornamentation to the right a^d left of the denominational legend
at the bottom of the note, three tiny balls varying in size have been
omitted by the engraver. The same defect is revealed in the sidewalk
curbing to the left of the automobile, the line being incomplete from
the corner lamp post to the motor car. On the face, under the superimposed S figure encircling the upper corner numerals, the perpendicular
shading lines do not appear in the counterfeit.
Close scrutiny of the portrait should enable wary handlers of currency to detect this counterfeit.
The Treasury Department, Secret Service Division, requests that banks and
others to whom counterfeit Government obligations may be presented endeavor when
practicable to obtain information regarding their source and history. Any information of this kind should be forwarded to the Treasury Department, Secret Service
Division, Customs House, New York, N. Y.

George L. Harrison,
Governor.
