Thus, of the total number of counties and parishes (in the case of Louisiana) in the Southeast, the proportion that are metropolitan has increased. Because of this, the rapid growth of nonmetropolitan manufacturing is all the more remarkable. 4O ver the long run, if the payroll portion of output or value added declines, we can generally infer that manufacturing is becom ing m ore capital intensive. This is exactly what happened between 1958 and 1967 in both Southeastern and U.S. manufacturing in general and am ong most major manufacturing industries.
