SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income increased $32.8 billion (annual rate) in October following a rise of $29.5 billion in September. The
increases for September and October were affected by three special factors—the telephone strike, special
payments to Postal Service employees, and hurricane damage. Without these special factors, personal income
would have increased by about $28 billion in October and $27 billion in September.

SELECTED MEASURES OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT
INSURANCE PROGRAMS
In October, the percentages of unemployed persons who had been out of work for less than 5 weeks and for more
than 27 weeks fell, while the percentages out of work for 5-14 weeks and for 15-26 weeks rose. Both measures
of average duration of unemployment—the mean and the median—were about unchanged at 20.1 and 9.3 weeks,
respectively.
