SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income rose $32.4 billion (annual rate) in February, following a rise of $6.2 billion in January. The
increases were affected by several special factors: subsidy payments to farmers affected both the February and
January changes; a pay raise for Federal Government employees, cost-of-living adjustments to several transfer
payment programs, and changes in social insurance contributions also affected the January change. Excluding
these special factors, personal income increased $19.6 billion in February and $11.1 billion in January.

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end data for foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictly
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included in loans rather than in other securities.
