Local economic changes that are reflected in this flow of data can be better understood, however, if we have a knowledge of the basic economic structure of those local areas. The following statistics, which are intended to depict local-area economic structures, arise, therefore, as a by-product of the normal activity of the Research Department and are presented in answer to many inquiries for such information. The Sixth Federal Reserve District includes Alabama, Florida, and Georgia and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Unless otherwise indicated, data cover the entire state. The trade and banking areas by which data are classified are areas having homogeneous characteristics, economic and otherwise, and consisting of counties surrounding major cities.
