AGRICULTURAL FINANCE DATABOOK May 1978 Monthly Series Emanuel Melichar Marian Sayre Division of Research and Statistics Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Washington, D C. 20551 Not for general distribution. Inquiries should be addressed to the authors. AGRICULTURAL FINANCE DATABOOK—MONTHLY SERIES MAY SECTION PAGE 200 FARM LENDING 210 PRODUCTION 220 FEDERAL 230 LIFE 300 1978 CREDIT LAND FEDERAL EXPERIENCE OF NONBANK INSTITUTIONS ASSOCIATIONS 3 BANKS INSURANCE AGRICULTURAL RECENT OPERATIONS AND COMPANIES BANKING RFSFRVF 10 18 DATA 23 PURI 1 C A T I Q N S IN AGRICULTURAL FINANCE 28 OVERVIEW Preliminary banking data indicate that non-real-estate farm loans at commercial banks increased by $1.3 billion in the first quarter of 1978, which widened the year-over-vear gain in these loans from 10.3 per cent at year-end 1977 to 13.8 per cent on March 31 (Table 301.1). In sharp contrast, outstanding PCA loans fell slightly during the first quarter, and their year-over-year change dropped from 10.4 per cent in December 1977 to 6,7 per cent at the end of March (Table 211.1). Two factors that may be contributing to these divergent trends are (a) average interest rates increased much faster at PCA's than at rural banks during the two quarters ending in March, and (b) demand for cattle loans has been strong, and banks have usually played a dominant role in feeder cattle financing. (If final processing and editing of the March banking data results in a different statistical story, we will rationalize it in the June issue!) We have corrected our procedures for processing banking data received from the Chicago and Atlanta Districts (Tables 311.3 and 312.3), and users of these data should examine the revisions shown. Additional historical data for the Chicago District will probably appear in the next issue. Some updated tables for Section 600 of the Annual Series Databook are enclosed. The USDA has recently published the results of a survey of banks and PCA's in 12 states. If you have not received a copy of Farmer Credit Survey, March 1978 (ESCS-17) and of the May 1978 issue of the Agricultural Finance Review, you may want to get on the appropriate mailing list by writing to Philip T.
