HOLCOMB F I R S T V I C E P R E S I D E N T AND CH IEF O PER ATING O FFICER May 2,1997 Notice 97-43 TO: The Chief Operating Officer of each financial institution and others concerned in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District SUBJECT Random Print Errors on IRS Tax Refund Checks DETAILS The U.S. Department of the Treasury, Financial Management Service, Austin Financial Center, has identified a random print error on some U.S. Treasury checks produced during the week of April 7, 1997. Intermittent printer hardware errors resulted in some checks having the ‘X’ character replaced with a ‘B’ character and the ‘Z’ character replaced with a ‘C’ character. So far, this appears to be limited to IRS tax refund checks. These checks are negotiable. The problem is random and appears to be limited to a small number of checks. The cause of this problem has been identified and corrected. The MICR line is not impacted by the misprintings, which occur primarily in the payee/address lines. Please circulate a copy of this notice to all those in your organization who receive and process IRS tax refund checks.
