F ederal r es er ve Bank OF DALLAS Dallas, Texas, November 15,1960 T o A ll B a n k s E le v e n t h in t h e F e d e r a l R e s e r v e D is t r ic t : A survey was made recently of one day’s volume of checks handled at the four offices of this Bank to determine the number of checks that are preprinted in con formity with the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition Program of the American Bankers Association. The following tabulation shows the results of the survey: Office Dallas City Country El Paso City Country Houston City Country San Antonio City Country Number of Checks Surveyed Number of Checks Conforming Percentage of Conformity 34,910 161,016 8,213 3,135 23.53 1.95 5,506 35,652 111 1,145 2.02 3.21 22,127 78,828 1,486 2,000 6.72 2.54 16,787 78,091 11 1,439 .07 1.84 Because of the number of banks that have started a preprinting program, the percentage of conforming checks should increase substantially in the next few months. Periodic surveys will be made in the future to determine the progress of the program. It is hoped that those banks which have not ordered a supply of preprinted checks will do so when the next order is placed with their printer. Only through the cooperation of all banks will the maximum benefit be derived from the check mechanization program of the American Bankers Association. Your cooperation in the preprinting program is appreciated. Yours very truly. Watrous H.
