Federal Reserve Bank OF DALLAS Dallas, Texas, February 26, 1957 CONDITION AND EARNINGS OF MEMBER BANKS ELEVENTH FEDERAL RESERVE DISTRICT To the Member Banks in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District: Assets of member banks in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District rose to a record $10,668,718,000 on December 31, 1956, reflecting a $417,179,000 increase over the total at the end of 1955. Deposits and capital accounts also reached new highs at the end of 1956. Net profits during the year were moderately above 1955 profits. Loan expansion in 1956 was comparatively moderate. The $69,410,000 increase, which compares with a net loan growth of $474,192,000 in 1955, reflects a significant tapering of District loan expan sion during the year. Loans to individuals showed the largest increase in 1956, accounting for slightly more than three-fourths of the advance in gross loans. Commercial and industrial loans, loans to finance securities transactions, and minor loan categories also showed gains, but a large part of these gains was offset by declines in loans to farmers and real-estate loans. While investments on December 31 were $128,430,000 higher than a year earlier and cash and balances due from banks were up $157,736,000, these increases resulted from substantial gains in the final quarter which more than offset the declines during the preceding 9 months. Deposits of $9,803,466,000 on December 31 reflected a 12-month gain of $314,758,000. Nearly two-thirds of this increase, or $196,143,000, resulted from growth in the time and demand balances of individuals, partnerships, and corporations. Deposits of banks showed the second largest increase, but each of the other deposit categories also rose. Member banks in the District added $55,464,000 to capital accounts during 1956, bringing the total to $736,460,000 on December 31. Yours very truly, Watrous H.
