W ALLACE DALLAS, TEXAS 75222 FIR S T VICE P R E S ID E N T September 6, 1985 Circular 85-116 10: The Chief Executive Ufticer of all depository institutions in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District SUBJECT Automated Clearing House (ACH) Research Report DETAILS The past few years have been a time of dramatic transition and change tor the nation's Automated Clearing House. Recent events, including interest in new ACH delivery methods and concern about established formats for the exchange of payment data, underscore the importance of gaining a better understanding of the needs of ACH services. In response to this need, the Federal Reserve has conducted a major research effort directed to financial institutions. This research project was designed to provide an "open-ended" opportunity for financial institutions to express their views about the current state of the ACH and their needs for the future. A sample of 166 financial institutions nationwide participated in the survey and the executive summary of the results is attached for your information. The data for the survey was gathered from both personal and mail interviews. Based on the findings of this survey, the Federal Reserve will be undertaking considerable development work on this service in coming months, and we will use the priorities and interest expressed by the national constituency as a resource.
