Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee 801 Ninth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20220 CCAC May 27, 2014 The Honorable Jack Lew Secretary of the Treasury Department of the Treasury 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20220 Dear Secretary Lew: A public meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (Committee) was held on Monday, May 19, 2014, at the Omni Hotel in Philadelphia. The Committee reviewed proposed obverse and reverse designs for the 2015 March of Dimes Commemorative Coin Program. For the coin’s obverse, the Committee recommended design MOD-O-15. The design, which was recommended by motion with six (6) members voting aye and four (4) members voting nay, depicts the profile images of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. Jonas Salk. In 1938, President Roosevelt established the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which is now called the March of Dimes. Dr. Salk discovered the anti-polio vaccine. Committee members commented that the design provided strong likenesses of these men; both of whom were important leaders in the fight against polio. The Committee recommended reverse design MOD-R-07 by collectively assigning 16 of the 30 possible points available through the Committee’s scoring process. The design is a beautifully rendered depiction of a mother and baby. The artist’s statement relates that the design was inspired by the many successes of the March of Dimes and is symbolic of a mother’s love. Committee members commented that the design has strong eye appeal and would be a particularly appropriate design for a coin commemorating the work of the March of Dimes to end the polio epidemic in the United States and for the prevention of birth defects. Further, Committee members commented that the pairing of the recommended obverse and reverse designs would produce a distinctive and very attractive coin fitting for the commemoration of the March of Dimes and the important service to the nation the organization has provided since its founding in 1938.
