f The J.9U1 average of monthly sales f o r each department I s used as a base In computing the sales index f o r that department,
f The order of the departmental categories follows t h a t of the new departmental reporting schedule Introduced by the System In January 191*8.
In t h i s (connection, I t w i l l be noted t h a t the department "Domestics, blankets, and linens" (included under "Housefurnishings" on previous
annual reports) has been s h i f t e d t o the major group "Piece goods" and redesignated "Household t e x t i l e s " . Although the new schedule
permits the collection of dala f o r a larger number of departmental categories than previously reported, nonavailability of data f o r the
base period precludes showing Indexes f o r most of the new c l a s s i f i c a t i o n s . The l a t t e r , however, are Included in group and t o t a l Indexes,
ate t—Based on reports from about 350 of the larger department stores located In various c i t i e s throughout the country. In 19li7, sales by
these stores accounted f o r about 50 per cent of estimated t o t a l department store sales. Hceever, not a l l stores reported data f o r a l l
of the departments shown; consequently, the sample f o r the Individual departments i s not so comprehensive as t h a t f o r the t o t a l . For
description of indexes see page 856 of the August 19L6 Federal Reserve Bulletin.

This, in e f f e c t , bases the

2/ The'orderof'the departiwntal catejrories^ollows that of the new departmental reporting schedule introduced by the System in Jamiaryl9l8.
In this ceonecticeTit will be noted that the department "Domestics, blankets, and linens" (included under "Fousefurniahings" on previous
reports) has been shifted to the major group "Piece goods" and redesignated "Household textiles". Although the new schedule
permits the collection of data for a larger number of departmental categories than previously reported, nonavailability of data for the
base period precludes showing indexes for most of the new classifications. The l a t t e r , however, are included in groan and total indexes.
Motet—Based en reports from about 350 of the larger department stores located in. various, c i t i e s throughout the country. In 19U7, sales by
these stores accounted for about 50 per cent of estimated total department store sales. However, not a l l stores reported data for a l l
of the departments shown; consequently, the esmpls fortfce individual departments i s not so comprehensive a- that for the total. Fcr
description of indexes see page 856 of the Anpust 191*6 Federal Reserve Bulletin.
