T he m ost up-to-date picture o f transportation services show s th at these services
contributed 60 percent m ore to the U .S. econom y than is show n by traditional econom ic
accounts.
A report, issued by the U .S. D epartm ent o f C om m erce’s B ureau o f E conom ic A nalysis
(B E A ), show s that transportation services contributed $378 billion to the national econom y in
1996, the latest year for w hich figures are available, $142 billion larger th an the estim ate from
traditional accounts. T he transportation sector grew by 21 percent from 1992, the only other year
fo r w hich com parable figures are available.
T he estim ates are the latest from the Transportation Satellite A ccounts (T S A ’s), w hich
provide m ore detailed inform ation on transportation than do traditional econom ic accounts. For
exam ple, the transporting o f goods from a grocery com pany’s w arehouses to its retail outlets by
the com pany’s ow n trucking fleet is included in retailing in traditional econom ic accounting
system s b u t is included in transportation in the T S A ’s.
T he T SA 's provide answ ers to such questions as: W hat is the contribution o f
transportation to the econom y? W hich industries are large users o f transportation? W hat goods
and services do industries purchase to support transportation operations?
T he inform ation from the T S A ’s is presented in four m atrix tables that are available for
free in com pressed files on B E A ’s w eb site (w w w .bea.doc.gov). T w o sum m ary tables show ing
how d ifferent econom ic sectors use transportation and how their transportation activities •
contribute to gross dom estic product for both 1992 and 1996 are provided below .
