T h e s e s u r v e y s m e a s u r e the l e v e l o f o c c u p a t i o n a l e a r n i n g s in
an a r e a at a p a r t i c u l a r t i m e . C o m p a r i s o n s o f in d i v i d u a l o c c u p a tio n a l
a v e r a g e s o v e r t i m e m a y not r e f l e c t e x p e c t e d w a g e ch an ge s .
The
a v e r a g e s f o r in d i v i d u a l j o b s a r e a f f e c t e d b y c h a n ge s in w a g e s and
em p loym ent patterns. F o r exam p le, p ro p ortion s of w o r k e r s e m p loyed
by h ig h - o r l o w - w a g e f i r m s m a y c han ge o r h i g h - w a g e w o r k e r s m a y
a d v a n c e to b e t t e r j o b s and b e r e p l a c e d b y new w o r k e r s at l o w e r ra te s .
Such shifts in e m p l o y m e n t c ould d e c r e a s e an o c c u p a tio n a l a v e r a g e e v e n
though m o s t e s t a b l i s h m e n t s in an a r e a i n c r e a s e w a g e s d uring the y e a r .
T r e n d s in e a r n i n g s o f o c c u p a ti o n a l g r o u p s , shown in ta b le 2, a r e b e t t e r
i n d i c a t o r s o f w a g e t r e n d s than i n d i v i d u a l jo b s w i th i n the g ro u p s .

T h e s e s u r v e y s a r e c on du cted on a s a m p l e b a s i s b e c a u s e o f
the u n n e c e s s a r y c o s t i n v o l v e d in s u r v e y i n g a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s .
To
ob ta in o p tim u m a c c u r a c y at m i n i m u m c o s t, a g r e a t e r p r o p o r t i o n o f
l a r g e than o f s m a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s is studied. In c o m b in in g the data,
h o w e v e r , a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s a r e g i v e n t h e i r a p p r o p r i a t e w e i g h t. E s ­
t i m a t e s b a s e d on the e s t a b l i s h m e n t s stu died a r e p r e s e n t e d , t h e r e f o r e ,
as r e l a t i n g to a l l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s in the in d u s tr y g ro u p in g and a r e a ,
e x c e p t f o r th os e b e l o w the m i n i m u m s i z e studied.
O c c u p atio n s and E a r n i n g s
T h e o c c u p a tio n s s e l e c t e d f o r study a r e c o m m o n to a v a r i e t y
o f m a n u fa c tu rin g and n o n m a n u fa ctu rin g i n d u s t r i e s , and a r e o f the
follow in g types:
(1) O f f i c e c l e r i c a l ; (2) p r o f e s s i o n a l and te c h n i c a l ;
(3) m a in te n a n c e and p o w e r p l a n t ; and (4) c u s t o d i a l and m a t e r i a l m o v e ­
m en t.
O c c u p a ti o n a l c l a s s i f i c a t i o n is b a s e d on a u n i f o r m s et o f job
d e s c r i p t i o n s d e s i g n e d to take ac coun t o f in t e r e s t a b l i s h m e n t v a r i a t i o n
in duties w ith in the s a m e job.

a r e l i s t e d and d e s c r i b e d in the appendix. T h e e a r n i n g s data f o l l o w i n g
