Area Wage Survey---The Trenton, N.J., Metropolitan Area
In tro d u c tio n

This area is 1 of 90 in which the U.S. Department of L a b o r's
Bureau of L abor S tatistics conducts surveys of occupational earnings
and related benefits on an areawide b a s is .1

to m erit presentation, or (2) there
individual establishm ent data.

In each area , data are obtained fro m representative esta b
lishm ents within six broad industry division s: M anufacturing; tra n s
portation, com m unication, and other public u tilities; w holesale trade;
retail trade; finance, insurance, and rea l estate; and s e r v ic e s . M ajor
industry groups excluded fr o m these studies are governm ent o p e ra
tions and the construction and extractive in du stries. Establishm ents
having few er than a p re scrib e d number of w ork ers are om itted because
they tend to furnish insufficient em ploym ent in the occupations studied
to warrant inclusion. Separate tabulations are provided fo r each of
the broad industry division s which m eet publication crite ria .

The averages presented re fle ct com p osite, areawide e sti
m ates. Industries and establishm ents differ in pay level and job
staffing and, thus, contribute differen tly to the estim ates for each job.
The pay relationship obtainable from the averages may fail to reflect
accu ra tely the wage spread or differen tial maintained among jobs in
individual establishm ents. S im ilarly, d ifferen ces in average pay levels
fo r men and wom en in any of the selected occupations should not be
assum ed to r e fle ct d ifferen ces in pay treatm ent of the sexes within
individual establishm ents. Other p ossible fa ctors which may con trib
ute to d ifferen ces in pay for men and wom en include: D ifferen ces in
p ro g re ssio n within established rate ranges, since only the actual rates
paid incumbents are co llected ; and d ifferen ces in sp e cific duties p e r
form ed , although the w ork ers are cla ssified appropriately within the
same survey jo b d escrip tion . Job d escrip tion s used in classifyin g em
ployees in these surveys are usually m ore gen eralized than those used
in individual establishm ents and allow for m inor d ifferen ces among
establishm ents in the sp e cific duties p erform ed .

These surveys are conducted on a sample b a sis because of
the u nn ecessary cost involved in surveying all establishm ents. To
obtain optimum a ccu ra cy at m inimum co st, a greater p rop ortion of
large than of sm all establishm ents is studied. In com bining the data,
h ow ever, all establishm ents are given their appropriate weight. E s
tim ates based on the establishm ents studied are presen ted, th e re fo re ,
as relating to all establishm ents in the industry grouping and area,
except for those below the m inimum size studied.
O c c u p a tio n s and E a rn in g s

1
Included in the 90 areas are four studies conducted under contract with the New York
Department of Labor. These areas are Binghamton (New York portion only); Rochester (office occu
pations only); Syracuse; and Utica—Rome. In addition, the Bureau conducts more limited area studies
in 78 areas at the request of the Wage and Hour and Public Contracts Divisions of the U.S. De
partment of Labor.

p ossib ility of d isclosu re of

Occupational employm ent and earnings data are shown for
fu ll-tim e w o rk e rs, i.e ., those hired to work a regular w eekly schedule
in the given occupational cla ssifica tion . Earnings data exclude p re
mium pay fo r overtim e and fo r w ork on w eekends, holidays, and late
shifts. Nonproduction bonuses are excluded, but c o s t-o f-liv in g allow
ances and incentive earnings are included. Where weekly hours are
rep orted , as fo r o ffice c le r ic a l occupations, referen ce is to the stand
ard w orkw eek (rounded to the nearest half hour) for which em ployees
re ce iv e their regular straight-tim e salaries (exclusive of pay for
overtim e at regular a n d /or prem ium rates). A verage w eekly earnings
fo r these occupations have been rounded to the nearest half dollar.

This bulletin presents current occupational em ploym ent and
earnings inform ation obtained la rg ely by m ail fro m the establishm ents
visited by Bureau field econ om ists in the last previous survey fo r
occupations rep orted in that e a r lie r study. P erson a l v isits w ere made
to nonrespondents and to those respondents reporting unusual changes
since the previous survey.

The occupations selected fo r study are com m on to a variety
of manufacturing and nonmanufacturing in du stries, and are of the f o l
lowing types: (1) O ffice c le r ic a l; (2) p rofession a l and tech n ical; (3)
maintenance and powerplant; and (4) custodial and m aterial m ovem ent.
Occupational cla ssifica tio n is based on a uniform set of job d e s c r ip
tions designed to take account of interestablishm ent variation in duties
within the same job . The occupations selected fo r study are listed
and d escribed in the appendix. The earnings data follow ing the job
titles are for all industries com bined. Earnings data for som e of the
occupations listed and d e scrib e d , or fo r som e industry divisions within
occupations, are not presented in the A -s e r ie s tables becau se either
(1) em ploym ent in the occupation is too sm all to provide enough data

is

Occupational em ploym ent estim ates represen t the total in all
establishm ents within the scope of the study and not the number actu
ally surveyed. B ecause of d ifferen ces in occupational structure among
establishm ents, the estimates of occupational em ploym ent obtained from
the sam ple of establishm ents studied serve only to indicate the relative
im portance of the job s studied. These d ifferen ces in occupational
structure do not affect m aterially the a ccu ra cy of the earnings data.
E stablishm ent P ra ctice s and Supplementary Wage P rovision s
Tabulations on selected establishm ent p ra ctices and supple
m entary wage p rovision s (B -s e r ie s tables) are not presented in this
bulletin. Inform ation for these tabulations is collected biennially.
StateThese tabulations on minimum entrance salaries for inexperienced
wom en o ffice w o rk e rs; shift d ifferen tials; scheduled w eekly hours; paid
holidays; paid vacations; and health, insurance, and pension plans are
presented (in the B -s e r ie s tables) in previou s bulletins for this area.
